Is inter vlan routing required for vMotion to work

$

0

At present I have a CISCO 3750 switch configured with the default VLAN. Currently all 4 of my ESXi hosts iSCSI and VMotion ports are assigned to VLAN 1 (default VLAN) and all switchports are in switchport access mode.

I have created 2 additional VLANs on the switch - 1 for iSCSI and 1 for VMotion.

When I move my ESXi hosts VMotion ports from the default VLAN to the newly created VMotion VLAN I am unable to perform a VMotion.

Move all ports back to default VLAN and VMotion works. Does VMotion require inter VLAN routing?

Any help would be appreciated - thanks.

vMotion Network clarification

Say, I have enabled vMotion on Management network and one more vMotion network (dedicated) as well. Which NIC will be used for vMotion if MultiNIC is not configured? As management network have to manage other network traffic, is it the only reason management network is not recommended for vMotion? ?

Failed vmotion powers off VMs???

Here's a fun one...starting sometime last night something happened to one of the hosts in one of our ESXi 5.0 U2 clusters.  DRS tried 4 migrations overnight (standard vmotion, not storage) to this particular host and all 4 failed at 9% with this error:

A general system error occurred: The migration has exceeded the maximum switchover time of 100 second(s).  ESX has preemptively failed the migration to allow the virtual machine to continue running on the source. To avoid this failure, either increase the maximum allowable switchover time or wait until the virtual machine is performing a less intensive workload.

The kicker?  The VMs were all found powered off.  Even better?  Even stranger, during the time between the start of the failed vmotion and the server powering off, all entries in the Windows event logs showed up as 6 hours ahead of the current time.

All existing VMs on the affected host remained online and working fine including time sync on the host and VMs.  Once I restarted the management agents on the host it was able to accept vmotions again.

This of course puts a damper on our stance that it's "never a VMware issue", so I'm wondering if anyone has run into this issue before and if it seems to be a recurring issue or if I just ran into a one off fluke?  I'm pretty amazed that this would actually power the VMs off, instead of doing what the error message states, and just leaving them as is on the source host.

Any ideas?

DRS Migration conflicts with Snapshot activities

Hi All,

Could it be possible that DRS Migrations can interfere with Snapshot activities. We see the creation, reverting and deletion of snapshot through script failing with error message

As we do not see al the activity of other departments and we are running on shared storage, could it have to do with the limitations of the SAN as far as SCSI reservations are concerned

We are running ESXi 5.0.0 768111 hosts.

Hi all

I have VMware ESXi 5.1 four server

2 Hosts  (Dell PE R 710) are with following CPU configuration :-

Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU X5650 @ 2.67GHz (6 Core) = 12 CPUs x 2.66 Ghz Logical Processors: 24

2 Hosts (Dell PE R720) are with following CPU configuration :-

Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU E5-2665 0 @ 2.40GHz (8 Core) = 16 CPUs x 2.40 Ghz Logical Processors : 32

But while vmotion we are getting error,  we have tried al VMware EVC option but still we are getting error. pls advice

VM running on two hosts after hung vmotion

Hello,

I started a VMotion of a VM from host A to host B. The request got hung at 65% for several hours. I restarted the VCenter service, relogged in to vsphere. The process was no longer running but now the VM shows up on both Host A and Host B.

The Cluster- "Virtual Machine" tab shows the VM and cycles between two hosts every couple seconds ??

Has anyone seen this before ? How do i correct this ? Thanks in advance!

Cluster Balance - Host Ram Differences

We have several hosts that ram has been upgraded in our cluster and the cluster doesnt seem to put more resouces on these hosts even though they have more available resources. Is there a way I can tweak the system resource allocation or some other settings to get DRS to use the hosts more efficently? It's not causing and issue but as we add memory or hosts I would be concerned it's not using the extra capacity effectively.

Thanks

Physical RDM

If we attach rdm discriptor file to a  vm will the vm read the RDM lun which that discriptor is representing.

By attaching i mean by going to VM-> Edit Settings->Add->Harddisk->Use Existing Virtual Disk-> and then give the path of discriptor file of rdm.

Please suggest.

I have storage vmtion a VM which had a physical RDM attached to it. The dispritor file of that physical rdm didint moved to new location. I dont know why it didnt moved to new location.

But now how can i bring those files to new location. Is adding RDM LUN again is the only method ??

SRDS and DRS Rules

Hi,

i am not sure if this is the right place to ask the question. So feel free to move it.

We are on a design for our new NetApp Storage. I read a lot of documents and papers about designing and implementing.

Now, like best practice i found, i would like to do the following.

We have a metro cluster and i wan´t to define a storage cluster for the site A and B.

After that, i wan´t to create VM DRS Rules. Exaclty the same. Site A and site B. So that VM´s running on Site A use the Storage from Site A.

So far so good.

But is it possible to marriage both rules together? So that it´s possible during a creation of a new machine to put the vm into the SDRS rule site A it automaticly put the VM itself into the DRS rule site A?

Does it make sense to have resource pools for Virtual desktops?

I don't think it make sense to have resource pools configured if all VMs in cluster have same priority but I have a reason to think it make sense to have resource pools based on following factors.

- Lets say I have 2 RPs and I don't want one RP VMs which are highly utilised impact other RP VM. This logic triggers only when there is resource contention.

- When there is no resource contention, RP's doesn't play any role

I believe if there is no resource contention, clusters/ resources behave like there are no RPs configured, is it correct?

Above comments are based on assumption RPs are configured with default values.

Running VM in a different geographical location (run your VMs on site A while their VMDKs are stored on site B.)

Hi

I am asking the question regarding running a VM's from a datastore located in a different datacenter in another geographical location? is this possible? I am asking because I don't think it will work but my manager is adamant that this is the way he want to do a datacenter migration? Don't ask

We will be carrying out test to confirm but would like to know if anybody had tested this already? if so what was the results

Cheers

To resource pool or Not to resource pool

I have two esx host, clusted and setup for drs.  There is an existing Resource pool that all vm's are included in.  So I have 20 vms in this one resource pool, with mostly default settings.   Would I be better off to just get rid of the resourse pool, or maybe create a second one for the more resource intense servers?   suggestions?

Resource Pool Reservation Question

$

We've been using vSphere for a long time and this is the first instance where we have looked in to using resource pools to manage cluster resources.  What we are trying to do is pool funds from several different groups into a hardware purchase, then split computing resources amongst those groups equally but allow others to grow beyond what their guaranteed fair share if the resources aren't in use by other groups.  And if other groups begin to need those resources back, we want vSphere to give back the "lended" resources seamlessly without causing any VM power on issues etc.

I'm fairly sure resource pools set with reservations equal to a specific group's allotment is the way to go here.  As I understand, resource pool reservations do not behave like VM reservations and even if I were to collectively reserve 100% of the cluster resources across all of the pools, one resource pool could still grow beyond it's reservation as long as there was no contention.  When contention does start, extra resources given to a resource pool will be taken away, but only down to it's guaranteed reservation.

Is my understanding of this all correct?  Is there anything I am overlooking that may cause issues, or a better way of accomplishing this task?  Thanks in advance.

SVMotion fails between 2 SANs

Having an issue transferring datastores.  I'm not going to go into the whys and wherefores, but I have 30-odd VMs in a single cluster to migrate over 9 identical hosts and 2 SANs and we're moving them all into 3 clusters.  Some are 'easy' - the hosts share the same LUNs on the SANs - FWIW, I can browse both and create folders on both -  so I thought I'd use do those and get them out of the way.  I just need to move the VM files from SAN1 to SAN2 - on the same host - and the host has full access  to both.  Yet it gets to 27% during "Migrating the active state of the Virtual Machine", hangs, then falls over.   The flat file seems to be created but nothing else.  Disk space is not an issue.  The error message says to look in the logs for the svMotion entries but they don't seem to be very forthcoming.  I have an entry that states "swap datastore is unset".  Can't find anything from Mr Google, and I haven't changed the swap location.  The only change like that is host cache on an SSD on each host.

With the other VMs - I have to move the files across datastores/LUNs and SANs and Hosts - fun fun fun!!   Lots of shared storage flying about.  This could get very very messy.  Going to take a long time, lots of planning.  Anyone done this and care to share?  I'll take all the help I can get!

<edit>

Looking at the logs it says is can't create the destination disk /vmfs/volumes/<ds>/<vm>/<vm>.vmdk file (no such device or address).

Understanding Host CPU and Mem Consumption

$

Dear All Experts,

I have a Blade with 16GB mem and 4 physical CPU with 4 core each. It is running Esxi 5.0, 914586

Now I created two guests Windows 2008 R2 64 bit and given 8GB mem each machine at the time of creation of these VM's but no memory is reserved for them. When I monitored the blade host using solar winds vm monitor and it tells me that the Host which is blade is occupying 91% of 16GB memory and this utility from solar winds also show the guests under the host, so I have two guests and it show that guests memory usage is ONLY:

- .21% for one guest out of 8GB given memory

- 7% for second guest out of 8GB given memory

Now my question is can I add other VM's here since I see that guests consumption is not high ? but when I see the host itself in this monitoring utility, it comes to mind that it is not possible to add more VM's to this host.

Any help for understanding this appreciated. Please note there are no reservations for this VM's. Please also find attached picture of solar winds utility for this blade. This is really confusing that only two guests are eating the full host or not ? This utility is giving real picture or what. I now have requirement for another VM so need to understand this question to proceed.

awaiting your responses.

Thanks,

Maintenance Mode No Longer Migrates Running Virtual Machines in Vsphere 5.1

use vMotion Network for Cloning a VM?

$

0

I have two Hosts that have 1GB Management and VM NICs and then a 10GB NIC for vMotion.

I have the vMotion NICs connected to each other via Fiber.

My Customer would like me to make a clone of 8 VMs (5TB of data) from one Host to the other.

When I initiate the Clone, it seem to take forever to clone even the smallest 150GB VM. About the same time as it did before I hooked in the 10GB network.

Does Cloning use the vMotion Network?  If so is there a way to Verify it?  If not by default, how do you tell it to use it?

I do not have the Ability to use the 10GB connections on the Management network as I only have the two Servers with 10GB ports and no Switch that I can use to then connect the vCenter Client onto to initiate the Transfer.

Any Suggestions?

Thanks,

EVC Issue

Hi All,

Since migrating to 5.1 from 4.1 we have been having issues enabling EVC, this had been working in the previous 4.1 environment but now when trying to enable EVC we get the following error,

The host cannot be admitted to the cluster's current Enhanced vMotion Compatibility mode. Powered-on or suspended virtual machines on the host may be using CPU features hidden by that mode. (We get this message for each of the hosts that we have upgraded)

Is there any way to identify what is preventing this being enabled?

Thanks

Alex

vMotion fails for certain VMs (14%)

I'm having an issue where a few VMs will not vMotion - the process stops at 14%. So far I've found 3 that have the same issue, all others work fine.

The error I receive is:

A general system error occurred:

The vMotion failed because the destination host did not receive data from the source host on the vMotion network. Please check your vMotion network settings and physical network configuration and ensure they are correct.

Other VMs that are on the same source host attempting to move the same destination host work without issues.

vMotion is enabled on a vmkernel port in port group on a dvswitch.

Heres a section of the log that caught my attention:

To cluster or not to cluster...

$

Hi all,

I have just completed a migration from vCenter 4.1 to vCenter 5.1 by swinging all of my 4.1 hosts from the vCenter service under windows to the new vCenter appliance VM.  I have 4 hosts (All Dells, 2x R510 and 2x R710) which have identical procs/memory.  I have organized them into a datacenter in vCenter, but I have stopped short of putting them into a cluster.  As they are now, I can vmotion between them without issue, and I only have Standard licensing, so I don't think I can take advantage of all of the great features of clustering like DRS.  So, my question is, what are the pros and cons of clustering at my license level if EVC is a non-issue?  Should I even bother?
